Ideas- Get Bashed but Keep Going Ahead

When the sun was setting in the ‘valley‘; it was rising in the India with new ray of hopes. And I was dreaming of the next big idea with my eyes open. I was still sleeping and idea started to convert into a flourishing business. I found myself pitching the idea to inner self. Woah, I was again successful in convincing myself to work hard on it (with the time now I have developed good presentation skills ;) ).

All of a sudden there was this annoying sound which was increasing slowly and sounded familiar. I realized that it’s my mobile’s alarm ringing. I looked on my mobile’s screen with half closed eyes; it showed 8:30 AM and I was already late for my class. I stood up from the bed and rushed towards the institute.

As I reached in the class professor was standing there with another quiz. I sat on a bench where a friend was sitting; and mumbled to him “why he takes so many quizzes without teaching anything?” And then professor was calling out my name saying “focus on your paper” and sent me to the first bench where no one was sitting (Yes, in college there is always space for you on the first bench). I started reading the question; wtf! I don’t have any idea how to proceed the question. There I was sitting on the first bench with no idea of how to solve that problem of ‘Communication Systems’; and the same thought popped into my mind again. Only difference was that I was not sleeping this time. I thought about it again and realized that this idea actually has good business potential.

After the class I was not interested in discussing the quiz instead I talked about that idea to a friend. He did not seem to be interested. I came back to the hostel and started researching about the idea and its potential. It was getting interested and I saw its lunch time now, but who cares about messy mess food.

I spent few more days on writing a business plan for the whole idea. Now, I was all set to pitch it in front of people; the final users of my product. I started talking to the people around me. First person was not interested in it and so was the second. I was backed down but I was still optimistic (you always have to be optimistic while you are working on a start-up). I pitched the idea to few more people; still there was not very good response. My seemingly good presentation skills were not showing the results this time.

The foiled attempt was making me furious and I started thinking that people generally say “when we will have next facebook or google emerging from India.” And after this I realized if things remain same we can’t see next facebook or google emerging out from India; because in India people don’t really care about your idea and your aspirations.

At the same moment another thought came into my mind that if someone in India would have come up with idea of facebook; people would have told him that:
“Why we need something which will connect friends on internet; we have better things to do over internet. We have cell phones, telephones, and posts (letters) to connect with them. And even if they are not sufficient we have pigeons (kabootar) for accomplishing the task.”

Out of frustration I started browsing internet and stumbled upon an article which brought a smile on my face. Few of the final lines were:
Whatever the current scenario is don’t forget you are an entrepreneur. Only you can bring that ‘change’ in the society. So, if you have got a ‘whacky’ idea, get feedback from few good people; go ahead, build the product and take it out to the market. We all know people will not support you initially but once you have validated the product they will. So “Keep Calm and Innovate.”

Prison Break

!

Candle Light Dinner

Once upon a time there was a guy who used to live in a small town of Mathura. His name was Alok. He was pushing hard to achieve his ultimate aim of pursuing MBA from a reputed foreign university. He worked hard for the GMAT and voila! He ended up in Harvard Business School.

Ambience of the new place was making him crazy. He was relishing the surroundings of the new place with his newly made pals Stephen, Charles, Maria and Jenifer.  Alok explored more and more about the place and the culture with four of them. They used to roam around the place together, party together and study together. They become helluva good friends.

Alok never realized but during this time he started liking Jenifer. The more time they spent together, his feelings for her became stronger.  Same was the case with Jenifer; she liked the simplicity of Alok. Both of them never talked about their feelings for a long time. Alok was diffident about his feelings for Jenifer. But, finally one fine day when Jenifer and Alok were studying alone in the library Jenifer confessed about her feelings. Alok was on cloud nine! He was singing songs; they talked whole day. By the end of the day Jenifer was glad that she had found a very loving and romantic boyfriend for her. Before going to their hostels Alok gave a tight hug to Jenifer and she felt ecstatic.

It was 11 p.m. in the clock Alok’s phone beeped and he saw an SMS from Jenifer saying:  “What about a dinner tomorrow?”

He replied: “I will be there waiting for you in the down town tomorrow 8 pm” and went to sleep.

Next day he woke up early in the morning. He was in high spirits throughout the day and was waiting eagerly for the day to end. He read few romantic stories in the afternoon.  As the time was coming closer he was getting more excited. Soon he started getting ready and reached the place by 7:45.

He waited for around half an hour and there she was! She was wearing a red gown and she looked ravishing. She came towards him and said that- “I've already booked a table for a romantic candle light dinner.”

Both of them sat on their table. Waiter came and lit up the candle and placed two glasses of red wine along with the menu cards. Jenifer told Alok that how excited she was whole day, but Alok looked lost in his thoughts. He was not saying anything but just mumbling.  She came closer to him and asked what happened to him. He didn’t respond even then.

She felt resentful but ordered few things to eat. Both of them ate their dinner mutely and came out of the restaurant. She said “I love you” before parting.  Alok did not reply.

He returned to his hostel; now he was feeling bit relaxed. He logged into his facebook account and updated his status:
I can never understand the romance of candles. I have seen too many power cuts. I am an Indian.
P.S.- @Jenifer: Love you too!

(In search of someone)

Social Networking - Truth behind the lies!

Few days back I was enjoying the party with my friends. It was my placement party. I was placed in Facebook. It was my dream job after working on a hacking project offered to me by leading IT Company of India during my engineering. My parents, my family members were really very happy. I was enjoying my time with Rolika as well and I was about to propose her. Rolika was my girlfriend. Everything seemed so perfect; I was able to imagine bright future ahead then.

But, today I am here in a very different situation.  At one instance I was thinking about my friends and on the other about Rolika. How can I forget those candle light dinners, those long drives, walking along with her in the rain? Those sleepless nights in the hostel with friends, booze parties, road trips! Myriad thoughts and feelings were screaming inside me. I was lost in my thoughts when a cop came and said “somebody is here to see you.”

It was Aisha, a friend of mine who completed her law this year itself.

Hi Sachin!

I could not speak a single word. She tried to console me. “I am with you, your friends, family everyone is with you. Just have faith in god and everything will be fine.”

“I have lost my future, my love and even I have lost my self-respect, how can everything be fine?”

Why it happened to me? Why? Why? Why? (My eyes broke into the tears and silence of jail made my cry even louder)

P.S.- I am trying a series of story, so for the coming parts please follow the blog.

Why IITians Should Do Start Up?

Few days ago I came across the article Why only few number of IIT kids end up doing startups. And then there was another article titled The 'Real' Reason Why Few IITians Do A StartUp; which is answer to the previous one. Being students of premiere institutes people expect a lot from IITians, so their arguments are totally correct. And matching upto once expectation is never possible. So I am not gonna add to that; but I will write about Why IITians should do a startup.

In India people are crazy about IITs and IITians, because IITs provide you a feeling of security. Once a child comes in ninth standard, his parents start expecting him to clear the JEE. It's not because of their craziness but they want a secure future for their child. Yes, IITs give you a secure future (in most of the cases). And it's not the degree which you get from IIT; but when you are in IIT you somehow develop certain qualities, skills and confidence that help you throughout your life.

Second reason behind craziness towards IITs is the privilege that IITians get. "Life doesn't give you a second chance, but an IIT does." Personally this is the good thing about IITs, you can always get a second chance. What it means is you start something and you failed after two years you can always opt a good job or you can go for your higher studies, but its not the case with other students of India.

So, I am asking  you to get a dream (an idea), believe in that dream, use that privilege, that confidence, those skills in chasing your dream (building a great product). Because an I-Bank or consulting company do not worth those skills. You will not be earning hefty in initial phases, but the skills you will be learning in the process will be priceless. Because as a start-up entrepreneur at times you will create your product, write the code, market your product, hire and train interns, deliver a keynote, write a blog about your company and list will go on. And if two or three years down the line your start up fails, you can always go for a job or higher studies with those tremendous skills. But I will not suggest you to do that, I will suggest  you to dream again.

India and Entrepreneurs

When I look at the poor villagers who are living their lives on farming and other small businesses such as by selling milk or by carpentry or by running small poultry farms, every time it reflects that there is a significant gap between urban India and rural India .

Today India is developing with a good pace, and more contribution towards development is of urban areas. Imagine if Indian villages or rural India will also grow with the same pace, then it won’t be very hard for India to become the ‘World’s Largest Economy’.Government of India is continuously implementing different policies to bring out changes; but somewhere we are lacking behind. Sometimes it is because of lack of funds, loopholes in those policies and sometimes it is because of our corrupted system. We are trying hard in last few years but are not able to overcome this situation. So few of us might have this question in our mind - Is there no way for villages to catch up that pace? Some wise person has said “Nothing is Impossible.”  So, there comes the ray of hope ‘Entrepreneurship’.

Entrepreneurs with their splendid ideas and motivation can bring that change. In recent times we have already seen start-ups which are turning into big companies just because these entrepreneurs have that motivation and passion towards their idea and they work hard for it. Development of rural areas will not be an arduous task for these entrepreneurs. But, currently E-commerce/ Internet based start-ups have become a trend in India while 70% of Indians live in villages and around 30% of total are below poverty line (in rural areas it’s even more). These internet based start-ups are increasing consumerism; also these start-ups are not coming up with any technological advancement.According to me entrepreneurs should address the large scale problems. Their ideas should primarily focus on rural areas, social problems and technological advancement. When I look at entrepreneurship it’s all about believing and working on an idea using the core competencies around. But unfortunately today’s Indian entrepreneurs are not focusing on core competencies of India. India has good fertile land and larger work force in rural areas; so their ideas should revolve around the same. There have been few start-ups which are very successful today which are addressing the problems of rural areas, one such example is SELCO labs.

To conclude I would say entrepreneurs should work around the problems in rural areas and villages, in this way they can play more significant role in development of India and that day will be not far when India will be the World’s largest economy.

P.S.- I know I am too young to write on this, and I am currently working on Internet based start-up itself. But this was my perspective towards what role should entrepreneurs play in development of India.

(Destiny)

Book Review: The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari

This time I picked up the book for reading The monk who sold his Ferrari by Robin S Sharma. You are reading this review, may be this is one of the effect of the book because it says you should share good things with others”. Writing a review for this book is just like adding a drop of water to the sea, but I think it is good to start off. So here it goes!

The monk who sold his ferrai is story of a lawyer Julian who believes in materialism and does not give any thought to anything apart from his law practice. One day Julian collapses with heart attack. He recognizes this omen as 'Awakening Call'. Now he wants to live more joyful and spiritual life thus he start his journey to the mystical land of India. After going through various places he finally reaches to the mountains of Himalaya and there he finds sages of Sivana, who knew all secrets of how to live a joyful life with simplicity, serenity and harmony. One of the sages Yogi Raman treats him as a student on a promise that after learning all the methods he will go to the west and pass on the message to others.

John, who is a friend of Julian and a co-worker, is narrating this story. Now Julian has returned from India and one can notice tremendous change in his personality and wisdom. He appears in front of John to pass on the wisdom and techniques he learned during his odyssey to India.

Now rest of the book revolves around seven methods to live a better, joyful and spiritual life. These seven sermons are based on different techniques such as heart of rose”, “secret of lake”, “art of self-leadership”,” do the things you fear”, “Yoga”, “mantras”, “power of discipline etc.   By practicing them, you can lead to state of self-mastery. Book also talks about the ultimate purpose of life.
John being a good learner asks questions quite frequently, which clears the doubts of reader as well and makes book self-explanatory.

I felt great reading about the rich ancient Indian culture. Being an Indian I am sure you have heard of most of the techniques and have practiced some of them. But in the recent time we are getting inclined towards western culture and forgetting the ancient Indian culture. In one of the chapter’s book also says: Books do not teach you anything new, they simply help you to see what is already within yourself.”
So I would suggest you to read this book if you are seeking a personal change in your life, if you are looking for tools and tips which can make your life more joyful and delightful. You never know this book may act as an Awakening Call' for you.

Hike in petrol prices!

Yesterday in Allahabad a pair of twin brothers got separated from each other. When we heard this news, we thought it is quite common there. But one of our reporter raised doubt that this is not the time of Kumbh, and to get the more information he headed towards Allahabad. There he met one of the brothers (who is not missing obviously) named Chetan and claims to be a writer. He said as soon as he heard about the hike in petrol prices; he along with his brother Bhagat went to petrol pump to get their car full with petrol. According to him it was too crowded and it seemed like whole Allahabad has gathered there. It was their turn and he realized Bhagat was missing; and he has not found him till now. We were able to feel the pain in voice of Chetan while he was narrating his story.

These sudden hikes in price of petrol were disaster not only for Chetan- Bhagat but also for other ‘Aam Aadmi’ of India. As we claim to be ‘Sabse Tej’ our reporters headed towards different politicians and other not so common people of our country to figure out what they think about these hikes.

One of the representative of UPA government said that “this was our attempt to support SP. Now people will be travelling on Bicycles. Ab nuclear government me support to karna hi padta hai.”

On asking to Finance Minister Pranav Mukarjee, he said “According to Shwet Patra of this year (though data are fake) black money has reduced to a very low level, and we felt quite ashamed. So we have raised the price of petrol in order to raise the funds in Swiss bank.

While Manmohan Sing remained silent over the issue.

Vijay Malyaa supported and said “this is government’s one more move towards realizing my dream India. Where beer will be cheaper than petrol.”

Then our reporter approached to Aamir Khan, but he was busy with his green campaign on his bicycle. That time he seemed quite confused (as usual) on the issue. But, finally he tweeted- Jab dil pe baat lagegi tabhi to baat banegi #Satyamev Jayate #Hike In Petrol Prices.

And when one of our reporters asked the same question to Sachin Tondulkar he said “Now I think I will take retirement, and will become a monk, after selling my Ferrari.”

Reportedly when Poonam Pandey heard about retirement of Sachin Tondulkar he offered UPA government to strip in front of them, if they will reduce back the prices of Petrol. And when Rahul Gaandhi and other senior members of party heard Poonam Pandey’s statement; they agreed to think on the issue again. Notably Manmohan Sing was still silent.

P.S.- Article has been written on the lines of faking news. It has no relevance in actual.

It's not a child marriage

Today is Akshay Tritiya, a holy day for Hindus and Jains, famously known as Akha Teej. On this day Veda Vyas and Lord Ganesha began to write Mahabharata. The meaning of the word Akshaya is infinite that which never recede. It is unknown why and when ritual of marriage that started on this day lead to the child marriages and as the day says Akshay it’s not ending even today, doesn’t matter how hard we are trying. Thousands of child marriages take place every year on this day in the different states of India such as Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh etc.
I can clearly remember this story from my past. Megha was her name. She was my neighbour. Beautiful is the only word in the dictionary from which I can describe her. She was 17 years old then when a business family came to their house with the marriage proposal of their only son with Megha. Their whole family got together for the occasion. Her father and other males of family were discussing about this proposal, suddenly her mother entered in the room and said: "Abhi to choti si bachhi hai, aur ladki ke liye shadi ki umar bhi 18 saal hoti hai, kahi police case me na phans jaye."

So after a long discussion they came to the conclusion that they will marry Megha with their son next year when she will be 18, she will turn into a mature woman and there will not be any government issues.

In the meanwhile she completed her school education and entered in college. There she fell in love with a boy. None of her family member knew about it. Time was running with its pace, and she turned 18. It was her birthday and the family who earlier came with the marriage proposal came again with so many amazing gifts. But they did not turn out that much amazing for her, she was not happy with this decision of her parents and was not in favour of marrying that guy. Her mother said: "Arey bahut paise wale hain, tujhe hamesha khush rakhenge."

But she was not convinced because she knew that her happiness is in that boy whom she loved. That boy convinced her to run away from the home and she did.

Megha was sitting in the corner of dark room; her pale face was telling the whole story. The girl who was full of life was not even speaking a single word today; it was raining from the last night and cool breeze was all around but she was choked with her emotions. The words which she heard from her parents last night were coming across her again and again.

Yesterday, her mother was crying, ” This girl has made us guilty, (itne salo me jo izzat kamayi thi aaj iski wajah se chali gayi).” Sound of lightning was adding more pain to her voice. Rain water was flowing with a great flow; but tears started drying in eyes of each person present in that house.

All the people living around her house were talking about her.

"Arey unki beti ke bare me suna?"

"Kya zamana aa gaya hai, ghar wale shadi kara rahe the aur ladke ke sath bhag gayi, aur jab wapis aayi to kisi ko mooh dikhane ke layak nahi rahi."

"Ladki ko padhne bheja tha aur ye waha ye sab kar rahi thi."

Yes, they all were right, it was her fault. Ironically, nobody is blaming the boy and their families who forced the girl into an early engagement against her wishes. If they haven’t engaged her with that boy she would not have run away from house.  At one place we worship goddess Saraswati, Laxmi, Parvati and in 21st century we are talking about women working along with men and attaining greater heights, but at other side we are still blaming girls for such things.

This is the one problem of our society and these days everyone is talking about women empowerment so we may think that things will change. But I started writing with one more problem that is child marriage. Megha’s parents refused the marriage proposal when she was 17, were they really thinking that she is not mature enough for marriage or just for the sake of rules they refused it?  They were living in the city, so they thought of rules and government once, but people who are living in villages they do not even give a thought to it.

As you can see almost whole India filled with orange color i.e. average female age at marriage is below 18 and one in four adolescent girls between 15 and 19 years of age in India is married. So this is as big problem as poverty or corruption and someone has to look into it more seriously. We have to overcome this problem for better and healthy India.

In the end I would like to make one more point: “Not that, teenage infatuations are bad but; "Even at at an age of 18 is a girl mature enough for marriage?"

India Need More Bhagat Singhs

23rd march, 2012

It was the 81st death anniversary of Shaheed Bhagat Singh. One of my friends shared a video of ‘Ae Watan Ae Watan Humko Teri Kasam’ on facebook. Thanks to the inspiring lyrics, the feeling of patriotism filled within me and with that zeal of ‘Inquilab Zindabad’, I started reading about Bhagat Singh. As soon as I did that, I started noting down some qualities of Bhagat Singh to think over them later. So here are some:

  1. Revolutionary: While everyone was following the Gandhian philosophy of non-violence, he refused it. And it’s obvious once you choose the path which is less followed you will face the criticism. He considered criticism and independent thinking as the “two indispensable qualities of the revolutionary.” For him no man is great without criticism.
  2. Heart Follower: He took the steps which according to his heart were the best possible to make India a free country. He believed in his way and stuck to his policies till his death.
  3. Thinker: After the Chauri Chaura incident, Bhagat Singh aligned himself with Young Revolutionary Movement. He thought of the Core Competency of India i.e. Youth, and tried to involve them in the movement. He also wanted to see India as a growing and stable economy.
  4. Management: He along with Batukeshwar Dutt planned to detonate the bombs inside the assembly, and they accomplished it. Planning this bigger task and Executing with just one person, SIMPLY SUPERB.

Think of a country with so many persons having qualities like him. The country would be the ‘Largest Economy’ or ‘World Power’. Isn’t that our aim? We are trying hard to become one, but do you think the PACE by which we are moving is good enough?

So according to current scenario I think India needs more Bhagat Singh’s. Of course, India is a free country today so I am not talking about freedom fighters or the political leaders but I am talking about the people who can revolutionize the country, Entrepreneurs. They are the Bhagat Singh’s of Free Modern India.

Confused?

Read the qualities of Bhagat Singh which I have mentioned, again. Aren’t they same as of the entrepreneurs? Indeed they are!

“An entrepreneur is the one who comes up with some revolutionary idea, faces criticism, believes and works on that one idea by using the core competencies around him and his perfect managerial skills; moreover he follows his heart and passion.”

I would like to just end with an appeal “Today we need more Bhagat Singhs, and I call them entrepreneurs, to make India largest, fastest growing economy and a world power.”

Also, I would like to say thanks to my teammates in TalEx  and Youth Diaries Arnav Mohan, Shubham Choudhary, Akshay Pamnani and Abhay Shukla for being a joint force in being a Bhagat Singh! :)
